A safe and reliable flanged joint is obtained through bolt tensioning. Tensioning tools are assembled onto bolts to be tightened; bolts and bolted joints act like two stiff springs. Hydraulic pressure is applied from a tensioning pump through flexible hoses. When the pressure is released, the bolt stretch is trapped and the bolt remains accurately load; tensioners can then be removed.
